Sugar Cookie Dilemma - Ideas?

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 3, 2009, 8:16 AM

So, I'm not a baker in the least, but the Equestrian team at my college wants to make horse-shaped sugar cookies for the city fair. I bought some cute cookie cutters on ebay and will get some Pillsbury sugar cookie dough that I'll just roll out to cut. Anyways, my issue to to "paint" them. I'm not sure if I want frosting.. or edible paints... or colored icing... or what. They need to look professional as possible (not sloppy kids cookies!) but I really have no idea how to color them. Ideas anyone??

Go to your local Michael's store, or the grocery store might have it actually... anyway, get the icing called "Royal Icing" it will harden nicely and be pretty. All you really need to do is warm the bottle up a little (NOT A LOT!!! It gets hot fast.) and pipe it on. Its easy I promise!!! My mom and I have a cake business and we do cookies a lot so... it works. I promise!! If you want to change the colors, just put in food coloring gel! Good luck! ^_^

I wouldn't use Icing. Icing can be hard to control! Have you seen this: [link] ?

when you say heat it up, is that over the stove or in the microwave? I'm figuring that burning icing would be bad... :faint:

Nope hah sorry should have explained. Heat it up in the microwave. You probably only need to put it in for 10-20 seconds, maybe a little more, just kinda test it, you know? Squeeze some out and see how easily it comes it out. You won't burn it, but if you get it too hot you can burn yourself pretty badly. Hope this works for you!!

I'm a fan of icings that don't taste like they are carrying loads of preservatives.

This recipe is simple, easy and depending on the amount of food colouring that you use, you can get lots of different colours.

Curious about who this Tanake Trang is?
:iconmillilicious:
Well, I'm not a fan of any icing on anything really (unless it's fresh cream topping), but fondant and gum paste work pretty well for decorating. Fondant's pretty easy to shape and work with, also~ You can get vector-like curves and shapes w/fondant~ Hehehe~

You could try making horse-shoe shaped cookies instead, with little silver ball candies for nails or something.

yes, but where would I buy fondant? and is it expensive?
